Report: Ghost + Dead Soul @ Hard Club

The past weekend saw the debut show of one of the most groundbreaking bands that emerged in the recent past: Ghost. Hate them or love them, the fact is that they have settled their presence in the nowadays music scene by releasing excellent quality albums, filled with catchy songs and charming melodies that you can’t get out of your head.
So the first coming of this Swedish occult band to Portugal was a highly awaited event for many people. And finally it happened, two dates in Porto and Lisbon.

The famous Hard Club hosted the event, courtesy of Prime Artists. And it didn’t take long for the Sala1 to fill up with anxious people, but first there was Dead Soul, a rather recently emerging duo created by blues artist Slidin’ Slim and electronic artist, song writer and producer Niels Nielsen. Accompanied by guest musicians, Dead Soul entered the stage to show that they were not just “the opening act for Ghost”. “Do Your Job” did lead people to sing along, while the band showcased their relaxed, yet competent, mixture of Electronics, Drone, Blues and quite a bit of melancholic Rock arrangements. “Lost My Way” slowed the pace down but counted with the audience’s participation with clapping. “Burn Forever” carried on the already well established performance by these Swedes, only to see the end brought by the song “Hounds Of Hell”. For those who didn’t know the band, it was a great introduction.

Overall, it was a quite intimate session with a band that showed that they have what it takes.

After a long period of anxious waiting while smelling the incense which was spread all around the stage, it was finally time to see Ghost, Papa Emeritus III and his Nameless Ghouls live! First came the band, then came Papa, singing the beginning of “Spirit” quickly followed by “From the Pinnacle to the Pit”. Immediately the crowd  was conquered! “Ritual” brought everyone back to the first album and was the first time that we could actually hear the audience’s voices rivaling with Papa’s due to all the excited throats that were all around.

After one of the many brief conversations that Papa initiated with the fans, things slew down a bit with “Body and Blood”. Soundwise there were no issues, and the general sound was quite good.

After a set of composed by 16 songs, no one wanted to leave, the audience wanted more and more, for this was a fantastic debut concert in Portugal.

Special thanks to Prime Artists.
