Report: MOITA METAL FEST 2016 – Day 1

This year’s edition of MOITA METAL FEST took place on the 1st and 2nd of April, at the usual venue Sociedade Filarmonica Estrela Moitense. It has presented us with an excellent billing of 18 bands, 6 on the first day and 12 on the second, which left their marks on the stage of a crowded room. Here’s how it went.

Day 1

The opening act for this year was HOTKIN, a young hard rock group that was all about the style and the rock n roll vibe. It was a nice gig, whereas the group showed some potential and a lot of dedication, despite not being able to conquer the crowd. The set list focused on the tracks from their upcoming debut EP, like “Let me hold you” or the single “Do It Again”.

SUNYA was up next. They are very energetic act, with a groovy and electrifying, but mellow, rock sound, leaded by some amazing female vocals. With great competence and an amazing stage presence, the group presented some of the tracks from “Missing Piece”, their most recent record released last year. Another good show for a room that now was at half-capacity.

NEOPLASMAH gave a theatrical vibe to the night. Sofia’s voice is unmistakably powerful, and their death metal with a technical twist doesn’t leave anyone indifferent to it, as shown by the sincere welcome given to them by the public. Despite being around for over 10 years, they only have two albums in their name, as such, some of its most well known tracks such as “Auguring the Dusk of A New Era”, “Sidereal Passage” or “Stargate To Infinity” were played.

FOR THE GLORY arrived ready to shake things up, and started the first big moments of mosh and stage diving that set the pace for what was to come during the rest of the evening. A well known band for many, got a really warm reception, and they proved, once more, why they are one of the biggest names in the Portuguese hardcore scene. Other than the usual songs like “110”, “All The Same” or the classic “Survival Of The Fittest” (that closed their gig), there was still time for a new song from an upcoming new record in the near future.

One of the highlights of this first day was SWITCHTENSE’s gig. The unofficial house band had an extra reason to celebrate, as this was a special release show for their most recent work, “Flesh & Bones” from which the tracks “All or Nothing”, “Super fucking Mainstream”, “Six Feet Underground” and “Monsters” were played. However, some of the oldest and more iconic tracks such as “Unbreakable”, “Into the Words Of Chaos” or “Infected Blood” were not forgotten. It was a smashing performance that unleashed mayhem on the audience, but no other thing was to expect, because even if you’re not the biggest fan of their music, the energy released from their performances is enough to make you enjoy them live.

ENTOMBED AD ended the night in beauty, and with a touch of brutality. The house was packing, and the mood for destruction, mosh and stage diving was bigger than ever. Risen from the ashes of the mythical old school death metal act Entombed, they were better than ever. After a great show in last year’s edition of SWR Barroselas Metalfest, they returned with a new record, “Dead Dawn”, under their name which they presented, without forgetting some of the oldest classics like “Left Hand Path” or “Chief Rebel Angel” that was the first song of the encore. To closed this first day of Moita Metal Fest, they played Venom’s song “In League With Satan” which the public sang along to.
