After two successful first nights, the last day of the festival was announcing some real interesting concerts to watch and follow.
First, Bavarian NORDLYS opened the ceremonies with a competent show, in which they tried to spread their ancient black metal references, with some approaches to old school Mayhem themes. They are coming back after more than a decade of inactivity, and they finished their performance with a second vocals replacing the first Lord Aarsang.
After them we had Chaos Invocation replacements, NEBIROS. It was somewhat strange to know that we had to miss one of the leading German black metal bands for an almost industrial black metal act. In fact, this trio presented a different approach to the general sound of the festival, with some Immortal’s joking corpse paint and lots of groove into their music, where the triggered drums took the main role.

And so the afternoon was going calm when Swiss misanthropic metalers BORGNE started their performance. We must say that they were able to keep everyone in the festival site, once their live sound seemed much heavier than the studio work, even if we can stop missing the live drums. But Borgne’s concert showed a live rage and scaring compositions that we weren’t expecting. “Fall of the Last Souls” and “Suffer as I Paid My Grave” were the more frightening songs. For more than 40 minutes we took that as our doom moment of the weekend.
But after, Germans ESSENZ pulled out a hell of a show with their mix of black metal with doom and sludge essences. This trio was able to maintain a pace going from fast black metal to lots of down tempo doom and even funeral doom dark melodies, where “Seae of Light: Pleroma”, “Extricate Spirits Amor”, “Observed by Spectres: Schizoph” and mostly “Observed by Spectres: Paranoia” banged our head out. Please pay attention dear Roadburn organizers! One of the biggest festival revelations.

So, four bands done; three to go. And Finnish cult black metalers HORNA opened the night performances with a killer concert, before the biggest assistance of the weekend, showing that they keep on going big in the European underground. There is no need to speak when songs like “Katseet” and “Sanojesi Aarelle” are echoing with raw sound coming from the stage in front of you. Also some new tracks like “Askel Lahempana Saatanaa” and “Kunnia Herralle, Kunninkaalle” made the story of the more intense performance of the festival, in a demolishing show that seemed to grab unanimous acclaim from the audience.
It would be difficult for any band to maintain that level, and MELECHESH was no exception, even if they were able to grab a significant part of the metalheads to the front of their stage in another black/thrash experience.
And for the final act, VON allowed us to experience their satanic live trip for the first time. But besides us, the rest of the audience didn’t seem that much compelled to assist to that historic performance. Well, we can’t really complain about the quality of the gig, once the band showed a high stage rotation, without any notable technical problems, and with no long breaks between the songs, except for one Venien escape to the back stage in the middle of the concert. Don’t expect to see satanic explicit content, but be prepared to whiteness a dark concert. Maybe they are now more close to be a good sludge band, but listen live to “Devil Pig” and “Satanic Blood” was something impossible to erase from our heads and neck, giving us that old black metal feeling that one could expect. The show ended abruptly, just like any fucked up rock star would do.

And that was it. The final hours outside the concert site proved that no one was willing to leave that early. And in fact, the final result of this Under the Black Sun turned out to be a very positive one, where long established underground bands joined some new local black metal acts for a true blasphemic weekend.
