Jorn Lande, one of the most iconic hard rock singers of our time, after a prolific 2013 with 2 great albums “Symphonic”, and “Traveller”, returns in 2016 with a covers album called “Heavy Rock Radio”.

Known not also for a solid solo career, but also for participating on Avantasia, Jorn opens up his box to us and deliver some of his favorite tracks, which go from hard rock to heavy metal, and dusting of also some 70’s great songs. Very well produced and recorded, and despite of being covers, we can listen that the voice of Jorn gives a life of his own to the songs. Adding to the talented band that played on the record (Thomas Bekkevold on bass, Trond Holter on guitars, Francesco Iovino on drums, and Alessandro Del Vecchio on keyboards), there’s also some guests on the list: Sid Ringsby (bass) and Jørn Viggo Lofstad (guitars) on “Stormbringer” (cover of Deep Purple), Nic Angileri (bass), Jimmy Iversen and Tore Moren (both on guitars), on “Rainbow In The Dark” (Dio Cover), and finally Willy Bendiksen who did drums on “Stormbringer” and “Rainbow In The Dark”, two great tracks of the record.

When it gets to a cover album, that in some way should be a tribute, Jorn nail it right as we can hear in songs like “You’re the Voice” (John Farnham cover), “Live to Win” (Paul Stanley cover), “Don’t Stop Believin’” (Journey cover), “Killer Queen” (Queen cover), “The Final Frontier (Iron Maiden cover)”, and “Die Young” (Black Sabbath cover). He even takes some risks, and present to us some fresh new formats of the songs “I Know There’s Something Going On” (Frida cover), “Running Up That Hill” (Kate Bush cover), and the most surprising “Hotel California” (Eagles cover).

In sum, it’s a great covers album, who doesn’t have an actor that shades the other musicians to promote a nice bunch of songs, but has indeed great musicians that give support to a tone so characteristic, as the voice of Jorn Lande.

7/10
