OVERKILL – The Grinding Wheel

Another Overkill record coming out is a great reason for thrash metal fans, and metal fans in general, to cheer up. The fuel of inspiration witnessed in the last years continues to flow in the womb of the band, as the listener will hear in “The Grinding Wheel”.

Produced by the band itself, the result is an obvious Overkill thrashing sound that follows the trend of their most recent releases. Songs like “Mean, Green, Killing Machine”, “Goddamn Trouble”, “Our Finest Hour”, “Shine On”, and “The Long Road”, are great examples of how to execute this genre in a very efficient and electrifying way. These are songs that could easily send a crowd into a moshpit. The album suddenly has a momentum break until it gets back on is track with “Red White and Blue”. The last tracks “The Wheel” (more thrash) and “The Grinding Wheel” (more hypnotic, with a sinking type of ending) are a kind of “Easter eggs”. These will make the listener re-listen the record and are some of the best songs the band ever wrote.

Like most of the band records, it has a punk attitude all around, which will delight the fans. Despite the fact that might not have a brilliant track that stands out from the others, it’s a consistent example of how a great record should sound. As this album proves, this formation experience along with one of the most notorious figures of this genre, Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, sure works out. This is an album the listeners wouldn’t want to pass by without a proper listening.
