From the rotten bowels of Baltimore (Maryland, USA), after eight long years of no new material, the mighty Visceral Disgorge emerge once again, with the album “Slithering Evisceration”, released on Agonia Records.

The brutal death metal veterans forged their reputation with their debut album “Ingesting Putridity” in 2011. It became one of the most popular albums within the genre and an instant timeless classic. But where once slams and groove reigned supreme in their music structure, we are now given a full blastbeat fest with fast riffs and shorter song length.

A lineup overhaul and the passing of Steve Rosenzweig, the original guitarist, might have led to the change in sound that we are presented with. This is pure brutal death metal through and through. Intense and furious blastbeat sections with a tight snare sound accompanied by precise swipes on the cymbals and pedal kicks that sound inhumanly fast. Razor sharp riffs that still resemble the older self of the band, but now played twice as fast. Songs like “Saprogenic Deformation” or “Spawn of Putridity” contain slower, groovier, slammier passages that will please the fans of the previous album. The gutturals are once again spewed by Travis Werner, whose vocals are more slithering and vacuous this time, rather than the carnivorous and rotten sounds that he previously created. The breathtaking artwork by Stephen Somers depicts the cosmic horror and science fiction that the lyrics speak of, in opposition to the hack and slash scenarios of the past.

Lastly, we need to address the elephant in the room. “Ingesting Putridity” became a landmark of the slamming brutal death metal genre, which carried Visceral Disgorge to the status of true legends within the community of fans, new and old alike. Fans were definitely expecting the same kind of sound that the first album provided and it is understandable that some may feel disappointed with this change. But as we all know, bands mutate and evolve constantly to satisfy their own needs and goals as creative artists. So, if you are looking for a direct clone of the first album, you will not find it here. Yet, the efforts made to create “Slithering Evisceration”, while not as original and impacting as their previous work, are still worth your time if you are a fan of the band, and the genre in general.

While this album may sound a bit generic, comparing it the over saturated market of brutal death metal, it is still a fantastic entry in the genre. A decent follow up to their debut and one more cherry on top of the brutal cake that 2019 has been for this music genre.

8/10
