HEAVENWOOD – The Tarot Of The Bohemians

Heavenwood cover

It had been five years since Heavenwood layed down a record, so the expectations regarding their new work “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” were set very high. After listening to the record just once, I can honestly say that the demands were met, and they’re back and better than ever. It’s an addictive piece, and the choruses of most songs get stuck easily on your mind.

The band has adventured themselves for the first time in a concept album, and the theme chosen, the Tarot cards and the studies surrounding them conducted by Frenchman Papus, have revealed to be an interesting and well explored choice, especially if you take some time to fully read and grasp the concept worked on the lyrics. Musically speaking, the songs are well built and composed, however, it’s in the details where the magic of it truly lies, making it a marvellous and rich album. The first song starts with an epic touch in its intro and a nice orchestration, setting the pace for what it’s to come.

Quality-wise the record is incredibly homogenous, however the songs are easily set a part, and each and every single one of them has a special touch that differentiates it. Listening to this album in full without skipping any track is key, but listen very closely to the songs “The Juggler” which is an amazing way to start a record, “The Empress” that will get stuck on your mind for days to come, and “The Lovers” where the female touch of Sandra Oliveira’s (Blame Zeus) voice makes all the difference.

Overall, “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” is for sure one of the best things released in the Portuguese scene this year, and rises the name of Heavenwood beyond the level of past glory to a band that is important and musically relevant in the present. Recommended to those who look for something fresh, unique and with a perfect harmony between melody and heavy music.

9/10
