Göteborg Brinner 2026 brings together Swedish Heavyweights and International Talent
Göteborg Brinner will take place on 22 August 2026 at Frihamnen in Gothenburg, bringing together a programme that reflects both the city’s rich metal heritage and the international reach of contemporary heavy music. Headlined by In Flames, the one-day festival will also feature Avatar, Dark Tranquillity, Napalm Death, Raised Fist, thrown, Múr, and Portugal’s Gaerea, presenting a line-up that spans melodic death metal, hardcore, grindcore, black metal and modern heavy music.
Created around In Flames’ vision of celebrating their hometown’s long-standing connection to heavy music, Göteborg Brinner continues a tradition that has made Gothenburg one of the most influential cities in the development of melodic death metal. Rather than focusing exclusively on one style, the festival combines pioneering Swedish acts with internationally recognised artists, creating a programme that reflects the diversity of today’s heavy music landscape. The inclusion of Gaerea further strengthens that international perspective, highlighting the growing recognition of Portuguese extreme metal on some of Europe’s most prominent festival stages.
Alongside legendary names such as In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and Napalm Death, Göteborg Brinner offers a platform for artists representing different generations of heavy music. This balance between established acts and newer voices contributes to a line-up that appeals to a broad audience while remaining rooted in the underground ethos that has long characterised Gothenburg’s metal scene. As the festival prepares for its 2026 edition, it continues to reinforce the city’s reputation as one of Europe’s most important destinations for heavy music.
Formed in Porto in 2016, Gaerea have become one of Portugal’s most internationally recognised extreme metal bands. Blending black metal with post-metal, atmospheric and progressive influences, the anonymous collective has built its identity around emotionally charged compositions, an intense visual aesthetic and acclaimed live performances. Releases such as Unsettling Whispers, Limbo, Mirage, Coma and Loss have demonstrated the band’s continuous artistic evolution, expanding their sound while preserving the intensity that defines their music. Extensive touring across Europe and North America, together with appearances at major festivals, has established Gaerea as one of the leading contemporary names in post-black metal. Their participation at Göteborg Brinner 2026 represents another significant appearance in a career that continues to elevate Portuguese heavy music on the international stage.
