Carnation are a Belgian death metal band formed in 2013. With 3 full-length albums in their discography, their fourth studio album will be released on October 16th.
They show that you don’t need to be the fastest to be the heaviest, and also that you don’t need to invent anything new; you just need to be faithful to the past to create a memorable album.
With a sound heavily influenced by Swedish death metal sound, these Belgians, in this album, return to the band’s core sound, but executed with a new level of precision and control. This album also conveys a great balance between faster and more mid-tempo songs, giving it a dynamic and lively feel that makes it impossible to get bored. Sharp guitars delivering riffs and, at the same time, cavernous melodies, intertwined with Simon Duson’s deep guttural vocals, between infernal growls and brutal roars, give the album a morbid and sometimes claustrophobic dimension. There are songs in which the guitars screech, shifting into a galloping death metal pace, punctuated throughout by intricate mid-tempo sections and guitar solos.
The opening track, “Blackmouth,” and “Towards Death” are rollercoasters of brutality, while tracks like “Symphony in Flesh” (the album’s title), “Kingdom of Dreams,” and “Labyrinth of Silence” add depth to the album through the atmospheres created by galloping guitars and the inclusion of more playful and technical elements. The final track, “Legacy of the Forefathers,” stands out as a nearly 12-minute death metal epic, where the various tempo changes elevate it to a higher level in this band’s discography.
Three years after their predecessor, Carnation return with their best album to date, an album that every death metal lover should have on their bedside table.
