Roadburn 2022 will take place on April 21st – 24th in Tilburg (NL) at different venues!

Last year the organizers set up an incredible streaming experience with Roadburn Redux – a virtual version of the festival with live streamming, recordings, interviews, chat and online hangouts that still managed to provide the annual fix of music extravaganza to the many roadburners spread worldwide.
In 2022, Roadburn comes back in it’s physical manifestation, ready to welcome once again all the fans headed to Tilburg for a much needed massive dose of music, for gathering with like-minded festival goers, and for the opportunity to meet up with friends old and new.
Held between April 21st and 24th in Tilburg (NL) at different venues, the main one being 013 Poppodium, this unique event has been gaining an impressive reputation over the years for always bringing up new interesting acts as well as special performances from renowned bands in a wide variety of genres, without any breaks or limitations.
“Redefining heaviness” is this year’s slogan, and that fits perfectly with the spirit of the event. As explained on the festival’s website:
“Roadburn is a leading light in the world of heavy music. Unrestricted by genre, Roadburn has an underground ethos that is coupled with big-league production values that allow us to champion scene-defining bands and pioneers alongside up and coming artists. We pride ourselves on creating a truly immersive experience every April.”
Different artists have been selected in the past as festival curators, contributing to the line-up of the event. This year the task fell on Milena Eva and Thomas Sciarone of the Dutch band GGGOLDDD, who will also present for the first time in front of a live audience their latest, emotionally-charged creation “This Shame Should Not Be Mine”, commissioned for last year’s edition – during which it was played on live stream – and later recorded as the band’s new release (out on April 1st via Artoffact Records).

This is what Roadburn’s artistic director, Walter Hoeijmakers had to say on the return of the festival in live form, and the curators choice:
“After two years of not being able to host a physical festival, we’re extremely excited to actually return in 2022. Given the circumstances, everything about this has been a real challenge, but we wanted to make sure that next year’s Roadburn will be a stronghold for the forward-thinking artists we all love so much – whether genre-defining established acts or young, up-and-coming artists. We really want to reconnect them with our international community – artistically, musically and physically – and to see them do what they do best: be on stage. We want to give them a platform in front of a live audience again, as it’s time to celebrate the music they’ve written over the past two years, or the much acclaimed albums that helped us through these strange, unprecedented times.
It’s equally exciting to have Milena Eva and Thomas Sciarone as our 2022 curators; their commissioned music project for Roadburn Redux, This Shame Should Not Be Mine, elevated GGGOLDDD to a whole new level, as it made such a huge impact – musically, emotionally, and spiritually. The intimate connection felt by everyone online will be greatly amplified at Roadburn 2022, and we could think of no one better than Milena and Thomas to get us all reconnected.”
There will be once again unique collaborations and special performances: Alcest will be playing “Écailles de Lune” in its entirety, Liturgy “H.A.Q.Q” and “Origin of the Alimonies”, Ulver will perform their 2020 release “Flowers of Evil”, while Icelandic Sólstafir will play their acclaimed 2011 release “Svartir Sandar”, just to name a few more reasons that make this festival something special for the fans.
And it’s on this note that is also important to stress out how much Roadburn is valued as an experience for the audience, which has united into a tight community of music lovers. Being able to see each other in person once again on festival grounds will be certainly a welcome relief from the difficult times we all have gone through over the last two years.
