Arcanxo Festival 2026 brings international metal together with a strong portuguese presence
The Arcanxo Festival returns on 17 and 18 July 2026, continuing its commitment to extreme music with a programme that combines internationally recognised artists and a significant representation of Portuguese bands. Hosted at A Freixa in Galicia, the festival has established itself as a meeting point for metal audiences from Spain and Portugal, presenting two days dedicated to a wide spectrum of heavy music.
This year’s edition is headlined by Dark Tranquillity, Destruction, Venom Inc., Wolfheart, Hellripper, offering a line-up that spans melodic death metal, thrash, black metal, traditional heavy metal and power metal. Alongside these international names, the festival continues to reinforce the close relationship between the Galician and Portuguese underground scenes.
Portuguese metal will be represented by ANZV and Chaosaddiction, two bands that reflect different perspectives within the country’s contemporary extreme music landscape. Black metal outfit ANZV continue to develop a sound rooted in Iberian occult traditions and Chaosaddiction complete the Portuguese contingent, contributing a more contemporary approach to aggressive metal and reinforcing the diversity of the festival’s programme. Their inclusion highlights Arcanxo Festival’s continued commitment to supporting artists from neighbouring Portugal alongside internationally established acts.
Since its inception, Arcanxo Festival has steadily developed into one of north-western Spain’s most distinctive heavy music events. Rather than concentrating on a single subgenre, the festival embraces stylistic diversity, creating a programme where melodic death metal, black metal, thrash, traditional heavy metal and modern extreme music coexist across two days. This approach has contributed to its growing reputation among audiences from both sides of the Iberian border.
The festival’s location in Galicia further strengthens its identity as a cultural bridge between Spain and Portugal. The regular inclusion of Portuguese artists alongside internationally recognised performers demonstrates a commitment to regional collaboration, allowing national bands to perform before a broader audience while enriching the overall musical offering. As Arcanxo Festival continues to expand its profile, it remains firmly rooted in the values of the underground community that shaped its origins.
Among the festival’s headline artists, Dark Tranquillity remain one of the defining names in melodic death metal. Formed in Gothenburg in 1989, the Swedish band played a fundamental role in establishing what became known as the “Gothenburg sound”, combining the aggression of death metal with melodic guitar work and progressive songwriting. Across more than three decades, albums such as The Gallery, Damage Done, Fiction and Endtime Signals have demonstrated a continuous willingness to evolve while preserving the band’s musical identity. Through extensive international touring and a consistently influential discography, Dark Tranquillity have maintained their position as one of the most respected and enduring acts within contemporary extreme metal.
