Abbath and Swallow the Sun lead Laurus Nobilis 2026
The Laurus Nobilis Music Fest returns between 16 and 18 July 2026, reaffirming its position as one of Portugal’s leading festivals dedicated to heavy music. Held in Louro, the three-day event continues to present an international programme spanning black metal, death metal, melodic death metal, progressive metal and modern extreme music, combining established acts with emerging artists from across Europe and beyond.
The 2026 edition welcomes a line-up led by Abbath, Swallow the Sun, Atrocity, Leaves’ Eyes, Avulsed, Grog and a lot more, maintaining the festival’s long-standing balance between internationally recognised artists and the Portuguese underground.
Throughout its history, Laurus Nobilis has developed a distinctive identity within the Portuguese festival landscape by focusing exclusively on heavy music while maintaining an accessible and community-oriented atmosphere. Rather than relying solely on headline performances, the festival continues to invest in discovering new talent through the Laurus Metal Battle, providing emerging bands with an opportunity to perform alongside internationally established names. This philosophy has contributed to the event’s steady growth and its reputation among audiences seeking a broad representation of contemporary metal.
The diversity of this year’s programme reflects the festival’s commitment to showcasing multiple generations and styles of heavy music. Atmospheric doom, black metal, melodic death metal, technical death metal, progressive metal and modern groove metal all feature across the weekend, allowing audiences to experience contrasting approaches while preserving the cohesive identity that has characterised Laurus Nobilis since its inception. The presence of both veteran performers and newer acts continues to reinforce the festival’s role as an important platform for international and Portuguese metal alike.
Beyond its musical programme, Laurus Nobilis remains recognised for fostering a close relationship between artists and audiences. Its setting, camping facilities and emphasis on the wider festival experience have contributed to building a loyal community that returns annually, strengthening the festival’s standing within Portugal’s summer heavy music calendar.
Among the 2026 headliners, Abbath continues to occupy a significant place within extreme metal. After first achieving international recognition as the vocalist and guitarist of Immortal, Abbath Doom Occulta established himself as one of black metal’s most distinctive performers through his unmistakable stage presence, influential guitar work and contribution to the development of the Norwegian black metal movement. Since launching his solo band in 2015, Abbath has continued to explore the aggressive yet melodic approach that defined much of his earlier career while introducing new collaborators and musical ideas. Across decades of recording and touring, his work has remained closely associated with the evolution of Scandinavian extreme metal, making him one of the genre’s most enduring and recognisable figures.
