Every time a band with the dimension of Cannibal Corpse records an album, the fans of more extreme music have a good reason to be cheerful. “Red Before Black” continues their brutality tradition, noticeable in their sound combined with zombie stories, murder lyrics and bloody apocalyptic visions. The album includes everything their long time fans could hope for.
As expected, with this many career years, they didn’t change their music winning formula, focusing primarily in providing the best possible songs. Songs like “Only One Will Die”, “Red Before Black”, “Code of the Slashers”, “Shedding My Human Skin”, “Firestorm Vengeance”, “Heads Shoveled Off”, and “Hideous Ichor” are the best moments of this record. All of them with great riffs and a powerful drum work, all aligned with the always spot on voice of George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. “Red Before Black” was produced, engineered (with the help of Art Paiz) and mixed by Erik Rutan (who helped the band in their early releases ). This album was mastered by Alan Douches. This is a good record of extreme music, a death metal exercise with technical moments that don’t overshadow the ongoing spawn of brutality, that has groove, speed, and strong shredding for headbanging.
It’s one of this year’s best records of this genre, which has been witnessing the release of many pretty decent albums. Nonetheless, when a band like Cannibal Corpse joins the party, one can expect nothing else than something special.
