Einar Solberg returns to Portugal with expansive solo vision

Norwegian vocalist, songwriter and composer Einar Solberg will return to Portugal this September for two intimate performances as part of his latest European solo tour. Promoted by Free Music, the concerts will take place on 22 September at Sala M.Ou.Co. and 23 September at República da Música, offering Portuguese audiences the opportunity to experience a project that explores a broader musical palette beyond Solberg’s work with Leprous.

Widely recognised as the founder, vocalist and principal songwriter of the progressive metal band Leprous, Solberg has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary progressive music. Since the band’s formation in 2001, Leprous have earned international acclaim through albums such as Bilateral, Coal, The Congregation, Malina, Pitfalls and Aphelion, developing a sound that combines technical precision with emotional depth and an increasingly adventurous approach to songwriting.

In 2023, Solberg embarked on a parallel artistic journey with the release of his debut solo album, 16. Rather than simply extending the musical language of Leprous, the record embraced a more personal and experimental direction, incorporating orchestral arrangements, electronic textures and collaborations with musicians from across the progressive music community. The result revealed another dimension of Solberg’s songwriting, placing equal emphasis on atmosphere, introspection and cinematic composition.

His forthcoming second solo album continues that artistic trajectory. Introduced by the single “Stella Mortua”, recorded in collaboration with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the new material expands the project’s orchestral ambitions while preserving the emotional intensity that has become a defining characteristic of Solberg’s work. The composition also features guest appearances from Keli Guðjónsson of Agent Fresco and Chris Baum of Bent Knee, underlining the collaborative spirit that shapes this new chapter.

Unlike Leprous performances, Einar Solberg’s solo concerts offer a different perspective on his creative identity. The arrangements place greater emphasis on dynamics, orchestration and atmosphere, allowing the songs to unfold with a cinematic quality that complements his expressive vocal delivery. While progressive metal remains an essential foundation, the solo project moves comfortably between art rock, contemporary classical influences and ambient soundscapes.

The Portuguese dates also reinforce the continued work of Free Music, a promoter that has consistently brought internationally recognised artists from the rock, progressive and metal worlds to Portuguese stages. By presenting both established names and distinctive contemporary projects, Free Music continues to contribute to the diversity of Portugal’s live music calendar.

For audiences familiar with Leprous, these concerts provide the opportunity to discover another facet of one of progressive music’s most respected musicians. For those encountering Einar Solberg for the first time, the performances promise an immersive experience centred on musical exploration, carefully crafted arrangements and one of the most recognisable voices in modern progressive music.
