Shred Fest 2027 brings Obscura and Pestilence to Portugal

The Shred Fest touring concept will make its European and UK debut in 2027, bringing a five-band bill focused on technical, progressive and extreme metal to Portugal for two dates in February. The Portuguese leg will feature Obscura, Pestilence, Cryptic Shift, Thus and Dvrk, with performances scheduled for 8 February at República da Música in Lisbon and 9 February at M.Ou.Co in Porto. The Portuguese dates are promoted by Free Music.

The European edition of Shred Fest will run from 20 January to 27 February 2027, comprising 39 concerts across Europe and the United Kingdom. German technical death metal band Obscura will headline the tour, which also marks the group’s 25th anniversary.

For Obscura, the tour represents an important milestone in a career that began in 2002 under the direction of guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer. The band’s approach to death metal has developed through increasingly complex arrangements, technical musicianship and progressive influences, with albums including Cosmogenesis, Omnivium, Akróasis, Diluvium and A Valediction establishing their position within the contemporary technical death-metal scene.

The band’s most recent studio album, A Sonication, continued that development, combining the technical foundations of their earlier work with a more expansive approach to composition. The 2027 Shred Fest tour will therefore arrive as Obscura enter their 25th year, providing a framework for the band to revisit their catalogue while continuing to develop their current musical direction.

Joining them are Pestilence, whose history reaches considerably further back. Formed in the Netherlands in 1986, the band became an important part of the European death-metal movement during its formative years. Their early work developed from thrash-metal influences towards increasingly technical and progressive territory, particularly across Consuming Impulse, Testimony of the Ancients and Spheres.

Led by guitarist and vocalist Patrick Mameli, Pestilence have remained active through several different periods of their career, maintaining their association with technically demanding extreme metal. Their presence on Shred Fest consequently connects one of the genre’s influential early European acts with a later generation of technical death metal represented by Obscura.

The bill also includes Cryptic Shift, the British band known for combining technical death metal with progressive structures and elements of avant-garde and atmospheric music. Their approach places considerable emphasis on extended compositions and evolving arrangements, making them a natural addition to a tour built around technically focused extreme metal.

From Denmark come Thus, whose music combines progressive and melodic death-metal elements. The band add another dimension to the bill, bringing a contemporary interpretation of extreme metal that complements the more established approaches of Obscura and Pestilence.

Opening the shows will be Dvrk, representing the newer French extreme-metal scene. Their inclusion completes a bill that brings together five bands from different parts of the European underground while maintaining a clear emphasis on technical musicianship and progressive songwriting.

The Portuguese dates will form part of the middle section of the European tour, following the band’s appearances in Spain and preceding further dates across France. Lisbon’s República da Música will host the tour on 8 February, followed the following evening by M.Ou.Co in Porto on 9 February. Doors are scheduled for 19:30, with the concerts beginning at 20:00.

For Free Music, the Portuguese presentation brings an established international touring concept to two venues, giving audiences in both Lisbon and Porto access to the complete Shred Fest line-up rather than a reduced selection of artists.

The concept behind Shred Fest has previously been presented outside Europe, while the 2027 edition marks its first European and UK run. The tour’s 39 consecutive dates reflect its focus on bringing technically accomplished extreme-metal acts to audiences across the continent and the United Kingdom.

With Obscura celebrating 25 years, Pestilence representing one of the foundational chapters of European technical death metal, and Cryptic Shift, Thus and Dvrk providing more contemporary perspectives, the 2027 edition offers a cross-section of different generations within the genre.

For Portuguese audiences, the opportunity will come across two consecutive nights: 8 February in Lisbon and 9 February in Porto. Both dates will present the complete Shred Fest 2027 line-up, with Free Music responsible for bringing the tour to Portugal.
