WOLFHEART – Tyhjyys

The Finnish band Wolfheart is back with their third opus entitled “Tyhjyys”, the Finnish word for “emptiness”. This could lead us to believe this is just another depressive band or album, but that is not true, since this album is simply a masterpiece of pure “Winter metal”.

“Tyhjyys” contains eight tracks, brilliantly produced and recorded at two different studios in Finland, at the Petrax Studio (Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Amorphis) and at the Deep Noise Studio. The mastering done by Juho Räihä is also a jewel in this treasure, making all instruments sound crystal clear and perfectly balanced, making it impossible for us to be quiet and not to bang our heads or do the air guitars or even air drums to all the songs – yes, all of them. Refraining from doing so might be a challenge for the listener and we do encourage you to listen to this album.

Starting this journey with “Shores of the Lake Simpele”, we can hear the call of the Northern spirits through the notes of an acoustic guitar softly cradling our hearts and souls in the midst of a somewhat incentive to continue and face this powerful storm of emotions and feelings.

“Boneyard” is this album’s greeting card since this is the first single the band has released some time ago and it is a very well structured and epic theme that will most certainly work live beside “The Flood” and “World on Fire”, the second and the third new singles, respectively.

The other treasure songs aren’t meant to be left in the corner of this ship as they are too good to be forgotten, “The Rift”, “Call of Winter”, “Dead White” and the album title track “Tyhjyys” will not only leave the listener with full heart and ears of captivating stories about nature and life but will also help build a wonderful image of how a Finnish winter should be.

Tuomas has got the special gift of recreating melodic death metal and shape it differently without being too repetitive, combining folk, doom and black metal elements, adding melancholy and melody, mixing the cold and darkness, towards the end, offering us a beautiful landscape of the Finnish blizzard, turning it into an unique genre full of versatility, Winter metal, always innovating.

The great musicians helping Tuomas on this adventure also deserve some attention so it’s time to take our hats off to Joonas Kauppinen for the killer blastbeats, Lauri Silvonen for the sublime bass lines and to Mika Lammassaari for the terrifying guitar solos.

“Tyhjyys” is a majestic act of Finnish Winter metal, purely overwhelming and Wolfheart is always raising the bar for the best.
