GAEREA – Limbo

Gaerea it’s a Portuguese black metal band founded in 2016. With two albums and one EP released in their four-year career, the evolution as musicians it’s incredible and made them known around the world.

Their second album, “Limbo”, was released on the 20th July 2020. Gaerea’s songs don’t speak about Satan or Antichrist – as a lot of black metal songs do –  their songs are more philosophical integrating a cathartic and aggressive vision from the world and society, and Limbo isn’t an exception.

The title of the album it’s very interesting, since Limbo it’s the place for the forgotten ones. Hate & Anger are the main emotions that cross our mind while listening to the album – with extreme vocals and heavy drums intensifying these feelings. All songs maintain that same violent intensity, even if sometimes that violence can calm down. “To Ain”, the first track of the album it’s the most “agonizing” song of the album. The very heavy vocals and lower ones in this song are translated to a growing feeling of anger and isolation – it’s an explosion of emotions! Also in this song we can hear some riffs that remember bands like Behemoth and MGLA.
“Urge”, the shortest track of the album, seems the heaviest one and the perfect representation of the tiredness caused by Limbo’s prison.

For those who have never heard Gaerea, I recommend listening first to ‘’Unsettling Whispers’’ (their first album) – which is also a good album. This will allow you, as mentioned here at the beginning, to notice their evolution. Limbo it’s an amazing album, with long songs that are capable of making us tired due to the anguish caused by the lyrics and to the song’s rhythm. Nonetheless, for me this is one of the best, if not the best, metal album of the year 2020.
