Black Cilice bring their elusive vision to DINAAMO in a landmark home performance

For more than a decade, Black Cilice have occupied a singular position within the international black metal underground.
Emerging from Portugal while maintaining complete anonymity, the project has become one of the country’s most respected extreme metal exports, earning widespread recognition through a prolific catalogue of releases and an uncompromising artistic identity rooted in raw black metal.
Despite performing at festivals and venues across Europe, one milestone had remained absent from the band’s history: a concert on home soil.

That changed on June 13, when NAAM Barroselas presented an evening dedicated to underground black metal at DINAAMO, bringing together Consummatio and Black Cilice. While the latter’s first-ever Portuguese performance understandably attracted much of the attention, the evening as a whole demonstrated the promoter’s continued commitment to supporting both established and emerging names within the national extreme music scene.

Opening the night, Consummatio took to the stage before a steadily growing audience. Although still a relatively recent name within the Portuguese black metal underground, the band approached the performance with confidence, presenting material that balanced raw aggression with carefully constructed atmospheric passages.

Eschewing unnecessary theatrics, Consummatio relied on the strength of their music to establish the mood. Dense guitar textures intertwined with relentless blast beats, while the harsh vocal delivery remained firmly anchored within traditional black metal aesthetics. Rather than pursuing constant intensity, the band allowed individual compositions to breathe, introducing slower and more melodic passages that created a welcome sense of dynamics throughout the set.

The intimate surroundings of DINAAMO worked in the band’s favour. Every layer of distortion resonated naturally within the venue, while the close proximity between musicians and audience reinforced the immersive character of the performance. Despite opening the evening, Consummatio quickly secured the attention of those already present, delivering a focused and cohesive set that demonstrated both musical discipline and growing maturity.

Their stage presence remained restrained but effective. Communication with the audience was kept to a minimum, allowing the music itself to remain at the forefront. By the conclusion of their performance, the audience responded with warm applause, acknowledging a set that successfully prepared the atmosphere for the evening’s headline performance.

As the lights dimmed once more, Black Cilice made their long-awaited entrance for what represented an historic occasion: the project’s first-ever live performance in Portugal.

Remaining entirely faithful to the artistic philosophy that has defined the band since its inception, the musicians appeared concealed beneath darkness and hoods, preserving the anonymity that has become inseparable from Black Cilice’s identity. Sparse lighting and an austere stage presentation transformed DINAAMO into a suitably ritualistic environment where atmosphere took precedence over spectacle.

Without introduction, the band launched into a relentless sequence of compositions that immediately immersed the audience in their bleak sonic landscape. Tremolo-picked guitar lines merged into dense walls of distortion, accompanied by unyielding percussion and distant, abrasive vocals. The raw production that characterises Black Cilice’s recordings translated remarkably well into the live environment, where subtle harmonic details emerged beneath the overwhelming intensity.

One of the most striking aspects of the performance was its unwavering consistency. Rather than relying on dramatic shifts or overt audience interaction, Black Cilice maintained an almost hypnotic flow throughout the set. Moments of haunting ambience briefly interrupted the relentless assault before collapsing once again into violent passages driven by blast beats and razor-sharp riffing.

Drawing material from across the band’s catalogue, the performance illustrated the evolution of Black Cilice’s songwriting while remaining firmly rooted within the raw black metal tradition. Melodic undercurrents occasionally surfaced beneath the abrasive exterior, adding depth without diminishing the oppressive atmosphere that defines the project.

The audience remained fully engaged throughout. Rather than responding through constant movement or exuberant participation, those in attendance absorbed the performance with quiet concentration, offering sincere applause between songs and at the conclusion of the set. It was an appreciation built on respect rather than spectacle, perfectly suited to the band’s ethos.

A Significant Evening for the Portuguese Underground

The pairing of Consummatio and Black Cilice proved particularly well considered. While Consummatio delivered a confident opening performance that demonstrated the vitality of Portugal’s contemporary underground, Black Cilice followed with a performance that lived up to the anticipation surrounding their long-awaited domestic debut.

Credit must once again be given to NAAM Barroselas, whose consistent support of underground music made this landmark event possible. By bringing Black Cilice’s first Portuguese concert to DINAAMO while showcasing Consummatio alongside them, the promoter assembled a programme that celebrated both the established reputation and the continuing evolution of Portuguese black metal.

As the final notes faded into silence, the significance of the evening extended beyond the headline itself. It was not simply Black Cilice’s long-awaited debut in Portugal, but also a reminder of the strength of the country’s underground scene, supported by promoters willing to invest in artists whose work prioritises artistic integrity over convention. Both performances reflected that philosophy, making the event one that will be remembered as an important chapter in Portuguese black metal.
