Poison Ruin bring their Dark Punk sound to Portugal in November
Philadelphia punk band Poison Ruin will return to Portugal in November 2026 for two concerts in Lisbon and Porto. The band will perform at Galeria Zé dos Bois on 4 November, with Lisbon punk group Bated Breath opening the evening, before heading north to Woodstock 69 on 5 November, where they will be joined by Matosinhos-based band Jardim de Cinzas.
Organised through collaborations involving Mondo Negro, Galeria Zé dos Bois and Produções do Diabo, the two dates present different local line-ups around the same visiting act.
Poison Ruin have developed a distinctive approach to punk, combining raw guitar distortion, forceful rhythms and direct songwriting with darker atmospheric elements. Their sound draws on several strands of underground music, including D-beat, post-punk and influences associated with early extreme metal. The result retains punk’s urgency while making room for a broader range of textures and moods.
The band’s visual and lyrical identity is equally recognisable. Medieval imagery, ruined landscapes, feudal figures and supernatural themes recur throughout their work. Rather than functioning simply as fantasy decoration, these elements provide a framework for examining power, alienation, oppression and the conditions of everyday life. The contrast between an imagined feudal world and contemporary social realities is central to the band’s artistic approach.
Their latest album, Hymns From the Hills, expands this musical and thematic framework. While distortion and heavy rhythmic patterns remain central, the record incorporates additional sonic elements, including blast beats, analogue synthesiser textures and ambient passages. These additions broaden the band’s palette without removing the directness that underpins their punk foundation.
The Lisbon concert will take place at Galeria Zé dos Bois, a venue with a longstanding role in the city’s independent music scene. Bated Breath will open the show. The Lisbon punk project, which brings together musicians with connections to other local bands, translates a songwriting approach developed in the studio into a five-piece live performance.
On 5 November, Poison Ruin will perform at Woodstock 69 in Porto. The opening act, Jardim de Cinzas, are based in Matosinhos and combine stoner and noise influences. Their sound draws on heavy, repetitive riffs, bass drones, feedback and experimental passages, offering a contrasting introduction to the evening.
The two concerts provide an opportunity to experience Poison Ruin’s combination of punk aggression, dark atmosphere and medieval-inspired imagery in an intimate club setting. They also bring together three Portuguese underground acts whose approaches reflect different directions within contemporary independent music.
