Steelfest XV begins shaping its 2027 edition with Rare and Exclusive Performances

Steelfest has unveiled the first thirteen artists confirmed for its fifteenth edition, offering an early indication of the festival’s continued commitment to the international black and death metal underground. With approximately forty bands expected to appear on next year’s programme, the initial announcement combines long-established names with rare performances and exclusive sets that reinforce the Finnish festival’s reputation for presenting carefully curated line-ups rather than following contemporary trends.

Among the most significant announcements is a special appearance by Dødheimsgard, who will perform a set dedicated exclusively to the band’s formative 1995–1999 period. The performance will focus on material from Kronet Til Konge, Monumental Possession, the Satanic Art EP and the landmark 666 International, revisiting one of the most transformative eras in Norwegian experimental black metal. Festival appearances centred entirely on this period remain exceptionally uncommon, making the concert one of the highlights of the first announcement.

The first wave also confirms the return of Finnish black metal veterans Archgoat, whose uncompromising approach has made them one of the defining names of the genre’s primitive tradition. Their inclusion reinforces Steelfest’s long-standing relationship with artists who have maintained a consistent artistic identity throughout decades of activity while continuing to influence successive generations of extreme metal musicians.

French cult act Osculum Infame will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their debut album Dor-Nu-Fauglith with a festival-exclusive performance featuring guest musicians. Equally significant is the confirmation of Greek occult black metal collective Acherontas, who will present “…And Cosmos from Ashes to Dust…” as what has been announced as the project’s final presentation at Steelfest XV. Both performances underline the organisers’ preference for unique concerts created specifically for the festival rather than standard touring appearances.

The remainder of the announcement further illustrates the stylistic breadth found within the underground. British death metal outfit Grave Miasma returns with its atmospheric and ritualistic approach, while fellow UK act Winterfylleth continues to represent one of the most distinctive interpretations of contemporary atmospheric black metal. They are joined by the uncompromising vision of Nyogthaeblisz, Canadian experimental project Moosegut, French black metal veterans Mortifera, Native American black metal act Maquahuitl, and underground names Abyssion, Rietas and Kratti, each contributing a different perspective to the festival’s artistic direction.

Although only thirteen bands have been revealed, the first announcement already demonstrates the philosophy that has defined Steelfest since its inception. Rather than relying on commercial headliners, the festival continues to prioritise artistic identity, historical significance and exclusivity, offering performances that often cannot be experienced elsewhere. This approach has established the event as one of Europe’s most respected gatherings for followers of underground extreme metal, attracting audiences seeking carefully selected line-ups rather than mainstream festival programming.

Among the artists announced so far, Dødheimsgard occupy a particularly significant position within the evolution of black metal. Formed in Oslo in 1994, the band initially emerged within Norway’s second wave of black metal before rapidly expanding beyond the genre’s traditional boundaries. Early releases such as Kronet Til Konge reflected the raw aesthetics of the period, while subsequent works including Monumental Possession, Satanic Art and especially 666 International introduced avant-garde structures, industrial influences and progressive songwriting that challenged conventional expectations of black metal. Over the following decades, Dødheimsgard continued to evolve through acclaimed albums such as Supervillain Outcast, A Umbra Omega and Black Medium Current, consistently redefining their sound without abandoning the experimental spirit that has become their defining characteristic. Their influence extends well beyond Norwegian black metal, inspiring artists across multiple branches of extreme music through an uncompromising commitment to artistic innovation.
