Fortress Festival 2027 marks 5th anniversary with Emperor as first headliner
Fortress Festival unveiled the first wave of artists confirmed for the festival’s fifth anniversary edition. Taking place on 29–30 May 2027 at Scarborough Spa, the event will once again present a programme dedicated exclusively to black metal and its related subgenres, reinforcing its reputation as one of Europe’s most carefully curated extreme metal festivals.
Leading the announcement are Norwegian black metal pioneers Emperor, whose appearance has been confirmed as their only United Kingdom performance of 2027. Joining them on the initial line-up are American atmospheric black metal band Yellow Eyes, Swiss avant-garde black metal collective Tardigrada, Canadian depressive black metal pioneers Gris, Canadian atmospheric black metal collaboration Miserere Luminis, and German black metal project Gràb.
Together, the first wave reflects the stylistic diversity that has become synonymous with Fortress Festival while remaining firmly rooted within the contemporary black metal landscape.
Since its inception, Fortress Festival has steadily established itself as one of the United Kingdom’s premier black metal gatherings.
Under the direction of Reaper Agency UK, the festival has favoured carefully curated line-ups over large-scale programming, bringing together internationally recognised artists alongside distinctive projects that rarely appear on British stages. This philosophy has attracted audiences from across Europe while preserving the intimate atmosphere that has become one of the event’s defining characteristics.
Among the confirmed artists, Emperor remain the most influential name on the programme. Formed in Notodden, Norway, in 1991 by Ihsahn and Samoth, the band played a central role in shaping the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Their landmark debut, In the Nightside Eclipse (1994), transformed perceptions of the genre through its combination of symphonic arrangements, atmospheric composition and uncompromising intensity. Subsequent albums including Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, IX Equilibrium and Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise further expanded their musical scope, establishing Emperor as one of extreme metal’s most influential acts.
American outfit Yellow Eyes have earned widespread recognition for their distinctive interpretation of atmospheric black metal. Formed in New York, the band combines expansive compositions with unconventional melodic structures, creating an expressive sound that has been widely acclaimed through releases such as Immersion Trench Reverie and Rare Field Ceiling. Their performances remain relatively infrequent in the United Kingdom, making their appearance at Fortress Festival a notable addition to the programme.
Representing Switzerland, Tardigrada have developed a reputation for crafting immersive and emotionally charged black metal built around layered arrangements and dense atmospheres. Since emerging in the mid-2010s, the band has become recognised for recordings that balance aggression with introspective composition, earning considerable respect within the contemporary underground scene.
Canadian duo Gris are regarded as one of the defining names within depressive black metal. Since the release of their acclaimed debut Il était une forêt…, the project has explored themes of melancholy and isolation through expansive compositions that have become highly influential within the genre. Their live appearances remain uncommon, adding further significance to their inclusion in the festival.
Also from Canada, Miserere Luminis unite members associated with Gris and other established projects to produce an atmospheric interpretation of black metal characterised by long-form songwriting, sombre textures and carefully developed dynamics. Their recorded output has consistently received critical praise for its depth and emotional resonance.
Completing the first announcement is Gràb, the Bavarian project founded by former Dark Fortress vocalist Grànt alongside guitarist Gnàst. Drawing extensively from Alpine folklore, regional history and traditional musical elements, Gràb have quickly established themselves as one of Germany’s most distinctive contemporary black metal acts, blending atmospheric composition with strong cultural identity.
The historic setting of Scarborough Spa continues to distinguish Fortress Festival from many of Europe’s outdoor events. Overlooking England’s North Sea coastline, the venue provides an architectural backdrop that complements the festival’s atmosphere while offering audiences an experience centred on both musical performance and community.
With Emperor and five additional internationally respected acts already confirmed, Reaper Agency UK has laid the foundations for another carefully curated edition of Fortress Festival.
As further announcements are expected in the coming months, the fifth anniversary is already shaping up to continue the festival’s commitment to presenting black metal in a setting defined by artistic quality, thoughtful programming and a clear sense of identity.
