Moonreich – Pillars Of Detest

“Pillars Of Detest” is the third original long-play signed by the french black metal group Moonreich, that came out via Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions. This release is a natural evolution, sound wise, of their previous record, “Terribillis Est Locus Ist”. The theme, unlike the previous works, is not about war or war related it is rather a reflection about life in the modern world and hate.

With a somewhat of a black n’ roll vibe, the first few riffs from “Ad Nauseam”, the record’s first track, set the pace for what is to come. Heavy, raw, and with a slight melodic touch that echoes in the midst of an grim and chaotic ambience, are the marks of this album, something well illustrated by the song “ Long Awaited Funeral”. Although, it is a somewhat unwavering sounding disc, the track “Pillar of Detest – World Shroud”, stands out right on the very first listening, for it is an epic raw black metal piece, that strongly shows the band’s true identity.

In short, “Pillars Of Detest” is a solid release by a band that shows some potential. However, in the pool that is the French black metal scene of the last 15 years, it takes way more than that to become a reference, or even a cult classic. None the less, it’s a good and honest record, which surely will generate some buzz. Recommended to everyone that likes black metal with a slightly different twist.
