Nevermore Return to Portugal in 2027 with Rivers of Nihil and Urne
Nevermore will return to Portugal on 22 May 2027 as part of their European comeback, with Rivers of Nihil and Urne joining the American progressive metal band as special guests.
The Portuguese date is part of Nevermore’s first European touring cycle since the band’s return to the live stage in 2026. The tour brings together the reunited group with two contemporary metal acts, creating a bill that connects Nevermore’s progressive and technical approach with the modern progressive metal of Rivers of Nihil and Urne.
Nevermore return to the stage
Originally formed in Seattle in 1991, Nevermore became an important name in progressive and technical metal during the 1990s and 2000s. Their catalogue includes albums such as The Politics of Ecstasy, Dreaming Neon Black, Dead Heart in a Dead World, Enemies of Reality, This Godless Endeavor and The Obsidian Conspiracy.
The band became inactive in 2011 following the departures of guitarist Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams. The death of vocalist Warrel Dane in 2017 subsequently made a return to the stage particularly uncertain.
In 2025, however, Loomis and Williams began rebuilding the band with a new line-up. Nevermore officially returned to live performance in 2026, beginning a new chapter while continuing to perform material from their established catalogue. The current line-up features vocalist Berzan Önen, alongside Loomis and Williams and the remaining members of the new formation.
The band’s current European activity has included appearances at major festivals and support dates with Judas Priest, marking the first sustained live period for Nevermore in many years.
Rivers of Nihil
Joining Nevermore on the Portuguese date will be Rivers of Nihil, the Pennsylvania progressive death metal band known for combining technical musicianship with atmospheric and melodic elements.
The band’s catalogue includes The Conscious Seed of Light, Monarchy, Where Owls Know My Name and The Work. Their self-titled album, released in 2025, continued their exploration of progressive and technical metal while featuring the band’s current line-up.
Rivers of Nihil have also maintained an active European touring schedule, appearing at festivals and on package tours across the continent.
Their presence on the Nevermore bill places two generations of progressive metal together on the same European tour, with Rivers of Nihil representing one of the more contemporary approaches to the genre.
Urne complete the line-up
British metal trio Urne will complete the Portuguese bill.
Formed by former Hang the Bastard members Joe Nally and Richard Harris, alongside drummer Richard Harris, Urne have developed a sound incorporating progressive metal, heavy metal and sludge influences.
The band released their debut album, Serpent & Spirit, in 2021, followed by A Feast on the Living in 2023. Their music combines extended arrangements with heavier riff-driven sections, placing them within the broader contemporary progressive metal scene.
Urne have shared stages with a range of established metal acts and have appeared at major European festivals, including Bloodstock and other events across the continent.
Three generations of progressive metal
The Portuguese concert will bring together three bands with different approaches to progressive and technical metal.
Nevermore’s catalogue provides the historical foundation of the bill, with Rivers of Nihil representing a newer generation of progressive death metal and Urne bringing a more contemporary heavy and progressive approach.
The 22 May performance will therefore form part of Nevermore’s continuing European return, while also giving Portuguese audiences the opportunity to see Rivers of Nihil and Urne on the same bill.
Nevermore’s return to Portugal marks another step in the band’s renewed live activity, more than a decade after their original period of inactivity and several years after the death of their former vocalist Warrel Dane.
