Monsters of Death Festival line-up for 2027

The Monsters of Death Festival will take place at Orfeão de Viseu in Portugal on 22 May 2027, bringing together seven bands from the international extreme metal scene. The line-up features German thrash and black metal veterans Desaster, British death metal band Gorerotted, Dutch black metal group Asagraum, Greek death metal act Dead Congregation, Swedish death metal band Demonical, Spanish extreme metal group Empty and Portuguese band Sigilo.

The festival will focus on death metal, black metal and related extreme metal styles, with a programme that combines established names and acts from different parts of the European underground scene.

Desaster, formed in Germany in 1988, have built a long career around a combination of black metal and thrash metal. Their sound draws on the raw production and aggressive approach associated with the early extreme metal scene, maintaining a connection to the genre’s traditional foundations.

British band Gorerotted bring a death metal approach characterised by fast rhythms, abrasive guitar work and an irreverent lyrical identity. The group emerged in the late 1990s and became associated with the more extreme end of the British death metal scene.

Asagraum, formed in the Netherlands in 2015, represent the black metal side of the programme. The band combines traditional black metal structures with dark atmospheres and a focus on themes associated with occultism and the genre’s broader underground traditions.

The line-up also includes Dead Congregation from Greece, a band recognised within the international death metal scene for their dense, uncompromising sound. Their music draws on the genre’s darker and more dissonant traditions, placing emphasis on atmosphere as well as heaviness.

Swedish band Demonical are scheduled to perform in Portugal for the first time. Formed in 2006, the group draws on the Swedish death metal tradition, combining distorted guitar tones, direct songwriting and forceful rhythms.

Spanish act Empty add a further dimension to the programme with their approach to atmospheric black metal. Their music incorporates bleak textures and extended arrangements, reflecting the genre’s capacity to combine aggression with more expansive, introspective passages.

Representing Portugal, Sigilo complete the announced line-up as the only Portuguese band on the bill. Their inclusion places a domestic act alongside six international groups from Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Greece, Sweden and Spain.

The festival’s 2027 edition will give audiences an opportunity to see several established extreme metal acts alongside bands working across different branches of death and black metal. With Orfeão de Viseu as its venue, Monsters of Death continues to contribute to Portugal’s live extreme metal calendar.
